Decision Fatigue: When Making Choices Becomes Overwhelming

Decisions…decisions…we make dozens of them every day — from the mundane to the profound. These choices ultimately affect our emotional, financial, interpersonal, and physical well-being.

On any given day, the sheer amount of choices we’re faced with can become   overwhelming, compromising our ability to make the best choices — leading to decision fatigue. The more choices you make throughout the day, the harder each one becomes for your brain, and eventually it looks for shortcuts. This may cause you to become reckless in your decision-making, acting impulsively, procrastinating on everyday chores and productivity all of which can have a snowball effect.

Take heart! Here are some ways you can keep this from happening:

1. Make fewer decisions. Look for ways to streamline your choices. Avoid random decision-making by using lists throughout your day. To-do lists keep us on track. Pre-plan your meals for the day (or week!) ahead, pre-plan your outfits too, automate your bill paying, etc.

2. Limit your options. Having too many choices will stress you out. You become mired in your decision-making and start second-guessing yourself. Try paring down your options, so you have a limited number of choices.

3. Simplify and streamline. Hobbies, activities and volunteering are all wonderful things to do, but if you’ve reached the point where you’re overwhelmed, it’s time to drop the excess commitments. Having fewer tasks and activities will lead to fewer decisions and will help you feel restored and in control of the choices you do make.

4. Clean and de-clutter: A cluttered, messy home environment can lead to a cluttered and messy decision-making process. It can leave you feeling anxious, stressed, or even depressed. De-cluttering and other home care trends go a long way to establish a more peaceful environment— and a calmer mind.

At Mindfully Minimized, we’re committed to helping you organize your home so that you can live a life that is more focused, calm, productive, sustainable —and happier! Find out more about how we can help you…give us a call today.
